guinea fowl

Just another day in agricultural paradise.

guinea fowl

After spending the first month on our new property and picking ticks off of our children, we decided that guinea fowl were a must for us. Guinea Fowl are notorius for tick and bug eating. I do believe their faces are something that comes straight out of a nightmare, looking like half bird half insane clown.
I sourced the guinea fowl from a farm about an hour away from us. They are already feathered which is nice so we did not have to house them in a brooder/indoors.

Guinea Fowl are flock animals and will stick together. When you first get them to your property, it is a no-no to just let them all start free ranging together. They will fly off an you will never see them again. After about 2 weeks of feeding them (heavily in the evening so they know where the free food is at night), you can start to let 1-3 out a day. After doing this for a month, you can increase the numbers you let out for the day. After 6 weeks you should be free to let all of them out for the day and still expect (hope for) them to return to their pen for nighttime roosting.
